CrossFit workouts incorporate elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, girevoy sport (kettlebells) calisthenics, Strongman, and other exercises. (Source: Wikipedia.com)
- High-intensity interval training – a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise. The exercise sessions generally consist of a warm up period, then several repetitions of high-intensity exercise separated by medium intensity exercise for recovery, then a cool down period. These intense workouts typically last under 30 minutes, with times varying based on participants’ current fitness level. It is used by athletes in non-endurance sports to promote strength, speed, and power and by body builders to build muscle mass. Anaerobic exercise examples: walking, long-slow runs, running, cycling, and rowing.
- Olympic-style weigh lifting – Athlete attempts to lift a maximum weight on a barbell. Examples: Snatch and Clean and Jerk.
- Plyometrics – “jump training” or “plyos” are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power (speed strength). This training focuses on learning to move from a muscle extention to a contraction in a rapid or “explosive” manner, such as, in specialized repeated jumping.
- Powerlifting – a strength sport that uses the squat, bench press, and deadlift.
- Gymnastics – sport involving the performance of exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, endurance, and control. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, chest, and abdominal muscle groups.
- Calisthenics – exercises consisting of a variety of gross motor movements – running, standing, grasping, pushing, etc., often performed rhythmically and generally without equipment or apparatus. Increase body strength, body fitness and flexibility, through movement such as pulling or pushing oneself up, bending, jumping or swinging using only one’s body weight for resistence. Usually conducted in concert with stretches. When performed vigorously and with variety, calisthenics can provide the benefits of muscular and aerobic conditioning, in addition to improving psychomotor skills such as balance, agility and coordination.

The USANA Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, was incredible. My schedule from August 24th through August 27th was filled with keynote speeches from world-renown experts and with afternoons of workshops covering all aspects of how to build and maintain an international business. Also there were numerous exhibit booths, a Discovery Center and fabulous evening social events to recognize and meet many of the 10,000+ USANA Independent Business Associates.
I have been using the USANA Health Sciences’ nutritional supplements for the past 14 years. My wife will tell you that I am never sick. USANA manufactures the highest-rated, most effective nutritional supplements and health care products in the world.
This was my first USANA Convention…24th Convention for USANA Health Sciences. A good friend of ours, Annette Sale Owens, told me that USANA was unveiling new information concerning an advancement in nutritional science. In the 19th century, “manifest destiny” was a widely held belief in the United States. American settlers were encouraged to expand west across North America. “Go West, Young Man, Go West” is a phase often credited to American author, Horace Greely. In an 1865 editorial for the New York Tribune, he wrote favorably about westward expansion.
Fast forward 151 years… and the times have changed. Americans are not leaving the cities but moving to urban communities. More than half the world’s population currently live in or near cities and this trend will continue. One way UNICEF defines urban is “where a significant majority of the population is not primarily engaged in agriculture or where there is surplus employment”. So people are heading to the cities to start a new life, pursue a career, and/or start a new business as a young entrepreneur.

In the last blog,” Asian Students Flock to American Universities” begs the question, Why?
The key to academic research success at American Universities is the economic commitment made, by the United States, to provide the “best”. The cost of doing research is very high and you need financial resources in order for the university faculty and staff to deliver significant amounts of cutting-edge research. These universities are receiving a minimum of $40 million in federal research expenditures. According to the Center for Measuring University Performance there are 165 institutions that meet the criteria. (117 public and 48 private universities)

American Universities – The Gold Standard!
THE DREAM – Grandparents want their grandkids to have the opportunity to go to an outstanding university…at a reasonable cost! For many…their grandkids will be the first to attend university. Families want their children to go to the best universities, have world-class professors as instructors and study cutting-edge curriculums that will position their children to move into 21st Century Careers.
Out of the Top 20 universities in the world, America holds 16 places and Europe 4. In the Top 100, America has 55 universities, Europe 35 and Asia/Pacific region has 10.

Made in America ! Doesn’t mean as much to the world today as it did thirty or forty years ago. During that time, I had the opportunity to visit more than 25 countries and saw how American “know how” was borrowed by other nations. We were the model of innovation and believe it or not, today, we still are.
The United States of America is 325 million strong. No other country is able to impact the world in so many different areas from business and technology to medicine or education. Sixteen American universities are in the top 20 in the world. We have the most international companies on the list of the Global Fortune 500. The world still looks our way for “vision” as we enter the 21st Century. Your grandkids should be proud to be Americans!
